Glass

Glass is beneficial in warming our homes through solar gain. It transmits natural light and radiation from the sun most efficiently if installed in the right position. It is also capable of being recycled, in whole or crushed form. Some insulation products, for example, are made from the recycled glass of smashed car windscreens. The manufacturing process requires a high level of energy unfortunately, but with sealed double-glazed units and heat-reflective coatings, glass can now be made that offers a much improved level of insulation, in fact as good as a clear cavity brick wall. It’s unfortunate that much of it is supplied from only a few manufacturing plants and is transported great distances to local merchants. One manufacturer in the UK, for instance, supplies 85 per cent of the country’s glass from one location.

Eco-option – select glass products based on their location and orientation in your home. Low-e (see Glossary ) coated glass is able to reflect some of the heat back into the room, improving its insulation value. Also consider using the light and heat radiation properties of single glass in a south-facing (northern hemisphere; north-facing in southern hemisphere) conservatory roof in order to capture solar energy.
